When it sounds too good to be true…

February 9, 2017 By Modern Remodeling

Winter months are historically slow for companies specializing in exterior remodeling like roofing and siding. It makes sense. Low temperatures, snow and ice make installation nearly impossible. However, with the mild winter we have had this year, companies are eager to capitalize. You may have seen quite a few radio or television spots advertising insane deals. Half priced roofs, lifetime warranties, free gutters, a restaurant gift card, free oil changes and a puppy. Okay, maybe not all of that but their deals are pretty appealing. So, is it really too good to be true?

Reading between the lines

While, there are companies out there offering legitimately great deals, there are also a lot of companies offering ones that only sound appealing but are actually not a great value. So, how do you decipher the good from the bad? You research these three things.

    1. Product: What products are covered in their special offering? Typically, to compensate for the lower price, your selection will be limited to only the cheapest or lower end products. In some instances, this may not matter to the consumer. For most consumers, however, this is a huge problem. A deal isn’t so much a deal if the quality is poor, especially when it comes to your home. Be sure to ask what products are included in the deal and do your research on them. We personally recommend GAF shingles and Certainteed siding products and are happy to help you decide which products are best for your home.
    2. Warranty: Will your new installation be covered under their warranty? The price cut has to come from somewhere and sometimes, it is in the warranty. Knowing your home is not one they have to service for years to come can justify the special discount. Be sure to read the fine print!
    3. Reputation: Regardless of how great a deal is, you should always factor in the company offering it. A good deal should instantly be cancelled out by a bad company. Check online review websites like Angie’s List, the Better Business Bureau and even their Facebook page. You can even ask for customer references and a good company should have no problem supplying them.

The truth is, when a company is offering a special discount, the money has to be recouped from somewhere. Whether that be by offering a lesser product, no warranty or poor installation and craftsmanship. Although, the mild winter has been extremely favorable to us in the business, it also means a lot of companies trying to capitalize on consumers and not always for the better. Take your time to thoroughly look over every deal to ensure it really is one and you can always contact us with any questions.

Can you really roof in the winter?

December 29, 2016 By Modern Remodeling

We always hear skepticism from customers when we schedule their roof replacement in the winter months. There are so many myths surrounding winter roofing, the hesitation comes with good reason but it is important to sort fact from fiction. The truth is there are two main factors to consider when trying to decide if you should replace you roof now or hold off until spring

Is it logistically possible?

The first are  the logistical concerns that come along with freezing temperatures and unpredictable weather.  Roofing requires certain tools and some, like compressors and nail guns, can be affected by the cold. When compressing and releasing the air in your system, humidity will turn into water. If the temperature is freezing, the water may freeze in the airlines and reduce the airflow that the installer receives on the roof. Nails needs to be installed flush with the shingle, not overdriven or under driven. When the airline is obstructed by ice, nails may not be pushed as deep as they should, which introduces a risk for under driven nails.

The human risk

Morale in roofing is very important, as it is in many other trades—when people hate their job, they cut corners. Especially if those corners can make them go home faster! Starting the day shoveling and ice-breaking on the roof doesn’t help the morale of the crew.  Roofing is also very physically demanding and because of the need to use your fingers precisely and bend your toes, a contractor can only wear small gloves and boots. For most roofers, it is uncomfortable below freezing and impossible below 20°F and probably not smart to proceed.

The verdict?

Trust your contractor. We’ve been doing this for over 26-years and we know the capabilities of our crews and equipment. Furthermore, we warrant our work for 10-years, so we would never put on a shoddy roof. If your contractor is properly certified, has customer references, a strong warranty and you trust them enough to install your roof, you should also trust their judgment. If you have doubts, feel free to contact us for a second opinion.
