What Does it Mean to be a GAF Master Elite Contractor?

August 9, 2016 By Modern Remodeling

GAFA GAF Master Elite contractor is an extremely prestigious award given to only 2% of roofers nationwide. GAF, the largest supplier of roofing materials and the standard for craftsmanship, deems roofers to Master Elite if they meet a rigorous set of standards, which take into account installation, warranties, certifications and customer service. To even be considered, a roofer must be properly insured, licensed, committed to ongoing training and education and have a record of strong performance within the community. You might be surprised at just how many roofers do not even meet these basic credentials, especially in Maryland where contractors are only regulated by the MHIC.

How do you become Master Elite?

  • minimum 7 years in business – 1 year in their certified program
  • 99% customer satisfaction based on independent surveys from GAF
  • 1 million general liability coverage + proper and valid workers compensation
  • satisfactory rating with BBB
  • GOOD or better credit rating
  • clean banking record (no overdrafts, negative info)
  • clean distributor reference (means we pay our bills)
  • no leins, or judgements unresolved on record
  • good workmanship record

How do you keep your status?

Just because you were awarded the Master Elite status but GAF one-year, does not guarantee you will received it again. GAF reevaluates your status each and every year. As a contractor, this means you have to provide quality craftsmanship and excellent customer service year-round. Should you have a customer complain to the Better Business Bureau, that could potentially impact your Master Elite rating and almost 70% of BBB complaints are roofing related. This means every customer and every job truly matters and we must live up to our Master Elite status, 365 days a year.

What does a Master Elite Roofer do for you?

GAF holds their Master Elite contractors to a higher standard which is why they allow them to sell exclusive products to customers that 98% of other roofers cannot. This includes the most comprehensive warranty in the industry, the golden pledge. This warranty covers not only manufacturer defect but also workmanship for 25-years. Most contractors only offer less than a 5-year warranty for their workmanship but GAF will stand behind your roof for 25-years under this warranty. Even if you are not so concerned about an extended warranty, it is nice to know you’re working with a contractor who can provide that option should you change your mind.

Furthermore, because of the rigorous process to become Master Elite, you can count on having a quality roof installed and working with an exceptional company. 98% of customer who work with a Master Elite roofer would recommend them to a friend or family member. That number is unheard of, especially in this industry where contractors usually have a bad rap. Credentials absolutely matter when it comes to such a huge investment like a new roof. That is why it is important to use a quality, Master Elite roofer like Modern.

Within the Hour, Guaranteed

Damaged garage door from fire department.

To be quite honest, there are a lot of emergency jobs companies do not want. It may be in an area of town they prefer not to work. The loss may be so minor, the profit margin in nearly insignificant. The homeowner may not have insurance and can not cover the costs, meaning the profit margin literally does not exist. The emergency may happen in the middle of the night or during a holiday or an incredibly important family event like the birth of your child (real story). The dirty truth is, restoration companies will and do cherry pick the emergency service calls they take. They will only go out if they’re vested interest is fulfilled. Modern doesn’t conduct business that way.

Our emergency services division, 1-800-BoardUp guarantees a one-hour response time to anyone who calls needing our assistance. We don’t rescind this guarantee just because the job isn’t all we would’ve preferred or the timing is inconvenient. When we opened our emergency services division, we knew there was a greater social responsibility at stake; just basic neighborly compassion and helping your community. When someone calls 1-800-BoardUp, they are often at their most vulnerable, experiencing a really difficult time. It may be a house fire or it may be a broken window but to a homeowner, these incidents are incredibly stressful.

Inside view of the damage.

This past Sunday night, a little after 12pm, we got a call for a small house fire. If you weren’t aware, it is legally the owner’s responsibility to secure their property after a fire. Well, although the fire was relatively small, the fire department had to go through the garage doors to extinguish it, leaving the home vulnerable. The homeowner’s called everyone they could think of from their insurance company to restoration companies they found online only to hear the same thing; it will have to wait a few days. It became quite clear to the homeowners that they were being pushed off as soon as they said they only needed their garage doors secured. Too tiny of a job for most to bother assisting them, that is until they called Modern.

We were happy to come out and board-up their garage doors, even though it was small job and it was very late on a Sunday. We were at their home with our crews within the hour, just like we promised. We worked until 3:30am, securing their home and answering any questions. We even came back out the following morning to check on the homeowners. We truly believe that running your business with compassion and respect for your community is always the best policy. We don’t cherry pick jobs and we do not turn away homeowners who need assistance. It isn’t and should not always be about money. Sometimes, doing the right thing just has to become the priority above everything else. When we say one-hour guaranteed, you can count on Modern.

Properly boarded up and secured.
